Wanda Bedard, founder and president of 60 million girls, gives an illustrated presentation on “Education for girls: innovating with self-directed computer-based learning in Africa.” 60 million girls has been supporting education for some of the most vulnerable and marginalized girls since 2006. With qualified teachers in desperately short supply in the developing world, 60 million girls has created pilot projects in Sierra Leone and recently in Uganda and Kenya using Raspberry Pi Rachel technology to help overcome the learning gap.

Author Louis E. Leprohon gives an illustrated presentation on his new book, Québécois culture through the eyes of an artist, 1935 to 1960: Marcel Dargis – artist and storyteller. Marcel Dargis, 87 years of age, is a naïve artist who has made a significant contribution to Quebec’s cultural heritage. His 750 paintings provide an exceptional recollection and interpretation of Francophone life in his parish of Saint-Lazare, Cap-de-la-Madeleine (now part of Trois-Rivières) in the late 30s, 40s and 50s.

Shanly Dixon, Ph. D., gives a presentation on the Atwater Library’s current Status of Women Canada-funded project aimed at eliminating cyberviolence against girls and women, a pervasive problem that includes bullying by social media, Internet luring and cyberstalking. The talk is timely given the new United Nations report urging action to protect the growing number of girls and women who are victims of online threats and harassment.
